Regina Resnik
Biography
Regina Resnik was catapulted into operatic stardom in 1942 when,
on 24 hours' notice, she went on as Lady Macbeth with the New Opera
Company of New York under the baton of Fritz Busch. She repeated
the same feat in her Met Opera debut in 1944, when she appeared
as Leonora in Il Trovatore, also on 24 hours' notice. After 13 years
as leading dramatic soprano, she began an even greater second career
as a mezzo-soprano in 1955. In a career spanning more than 50 years
and more then 80 roles, Ms. Resnik was a regular guest at the Met,
San Francisco, Vienna, Covent Garden, Berlin, Buenos Aires and Paris.
He collaborations with conducting giants such as Bernstein, Solti,
Klemperer, Kleiber, Reiner and Rostropovich are legendary. She became
the only singer in operatic history to sing all the mezzo soprano
leads in half her repertory, and became synonymous with four roles
which were her signature parts and have become the standards of
comparison ever since: Carmen, Mistress Quickly in Falstaff, Klytemnestra
in Elektra and the Countess in The Queen of Spades.
From 1971 to 1981 Ms. Resnik and her late husband, the painter
and sculptor Arbit Blatas, directed and designed 10 international
opera productions, from the Hamburg State Opera to the Australian
Opera to the Vancouver Opera. In 1987, Ms. Resnik made her musical
theatre debut as Frau Schneider in Cabaret with Joel Grey, for which
she won a Tony Nomination. Her performance as Madame Armfeldt in
A Little Night Music at the New York City Opera in 1990, broadcast
on PBS' "Great Performances," earned her a Drama Desk
Nomination. In 1992, the 50th anniversary of her operatic debut
was celebrated in New York, Vienna and Venice.
Ms. Resnik made her film directing debut in 1983 with her acclaimed
documentary, Geto: The Historic Ghetto of Venice, which was shown
on PBS Channel 13. This past January, Ms. Resnik's current documentary,
"Blatas: A Painter's Homage to The Threepenny Opera,"
was shown as part of "Regina Resnik Presents Kust Weill Centenary"
at Hunter College, in conjunction with the concert "The Classic
Kurt Weill." The third in a series of unique artistic events
hosted by Mrs. Resnik since 1997, the concert was sold out and filmed
by CBS.
In the last decade, Ms. Resnik has dedicated her time to young
singers, teaching yearly at the Met's Young Artist Program, and
as a guest at L'Opera de la Bastille, the
San Francisco Opera, the Curtis School of Music, and the Juilliard,
Manhattan and Mannes Schools, among others. She is also Director
of Vocal and Interpretive Art for the Euro Bottega, a workshop for
singers in the European Union. Most recently, she was named Master
Teacher-in-Residence at the Mannes School.
