Christina Petrowska

 

ALESSIO VLAD
Conductor and Composer

Alessio Vlad is a celebrated conductor, composer and arts administrator. A regular guest conductor with Italian orchestras and opera theatres including Bologna, the Rome Opera, the Massimo in Palermo, Cagliari, the Toscanini Orchestra, and the RAI Orchestra in Torino, and enjoys a rich recording career with Rome's Santa Cecilia Chamber Orchestra. Also in Europe he has appeared with the Schlkeswig-Holstein Philarmonie, Dresden Philarmonie, and Weimar Staatskapelle. Last season's highlight was a production of Bellini's "Norma" in Nantes.

His work as a composer has taken him into theatre and film, composing for directors such as Cristina Comencini ("Via Dove Ti Porta il Cuore", "Liberate I Pesci"), Bernardo Bertolucci ("Besieged", winner of the 1999 Golden Globe for best Italian Soundtrack); Franco Zeffirelli ("Six Characters in Search of an Author", "Sparrow: Storia di Una Capinera", "Jane Eyre", "A Tea with Mussolini", "Callas Forever", and a documentary "Tuscany"), and Giorgio Ferrara ("Tosca e Altre Due").

Since 1991 he has served as Artistic Director for the summer festival "Ravello-City of Music" where he formed a youth orchestra in association with artists including Frank Peter Zimmerman, Katia and Mariella Labeque, Misha Maisky, Aldo Ciccolini, Michaele Campanella and many others. From 1999 to 2002 he was Artistic Director of Teatro Carlo Felice of Genova.

He is currently Artistic Director of Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro delle Muse in Ancona, and continues his participation in Ravello.

Maestro Vlad makes his Canadian debut as a guest conductor with the Toronto Philharmonia Orchestra April 26, 2007. The program features his own music for Italian cinema as well as scores by Nino Rota for Directors Zeffirelli, Visconti and Fellini.
